Gotham Glows From Boob Tube

It’s refreshing to watch something on terrorism, race, politics or violence that isn’t serious. The third season of Live at Gotham from Comedy Central has comedians such as Tommy Davidson, Raj Desi, Jon Dore, Noe Gonzalez, Erin Judge, Geoff Tate and Bengt Washburn.

Davidson’s jokes weren’t quite topical, but amusing. He joked about black women and terrorism.

He said, “Terrorism is based on surprise. You can‘t surprise a black woman, she‘s unsurpriseable.”

Although the bit was funny, it was sort of creepy to see him imitate walkie talkies, terrorists and black women. Frankly, it looked like he was having a seizure, while standing.

Another creepy, yet funny, joke was told by Raj Desi. Desi said most of what he talks about is things most people know about. He takes clichéd ideas and gives them a certain point of absurdity. One example, Animal Planet’s guide of what to do when you run into a wild animal.

The bit starts out pretty normal.

For instance, he explained if you run into a bear, you stand still to intimidate it and with a shark you punch it in the nose and it leaves. Wow, are we trying to save our lives or be Superman?

Now, his zany spin for a mountain lion. “If a mountain lion approaches you, put it in a headlock, then make him admit that he’s gay,” he said.

Geez Raj, why not call him fat and make him cry while you’re at it. The material was funny but I thought he was a little mean to the poor mountain lion. But if you have a choice between being mean and being eaten—go with the first one.

The third comedian, Jon Dore joked about text messaging. He said he is sick of a phone that is trying to predict what he says.
